With the expansion of wind energy as a driver of the energy transition, the constant red flashing of obstruction lights has increasingly become a problem for local residents.
In response to this growing nuisance, an Aircraft Detection Lighting System (ADLS) offers a solution to reduce unnecessary light emissions and restore the natural darkness of the night sky: The lights are only activated when an aircraft is detected in the vicinity.
Quantec Sensors is a leader in the development and implementation of ADLS technology and has deployed numerous systems for on-demand activation of obstruction lights for wind turbines. As a major player in Europe, we have established ourselves as a leading provider of ADLS services.

In 2024, the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority issued a set of guidelines on how wind farm operators can use ADLS to activate the obstacle warning lights on their wind turbines only when an aircraft is detected in the vicinity of the wind farm.
This is how it works:
- An active radar system (primary and secondary radar system) continuously monitors the airspace around the wind farm. If there are no aircraft in the airspace, the light signals from the obstruction lights are suppressed to prevent any light emissions
- The radar system determines the speed and direction of all aircraft in the detection area and assesses whether obstruction lights need to be activated.
- Only when an aircraft approaching the wind farm is detected within the prescribed activation range is a signal sent to the light control unit (LCU) of the wind farm or wind turbine, thus activating the obstruction light
- As soon as the aircraft has safely left the detection area, the obstruction lights are switched off, thus avoiding unnecessary light emissions
- No aircraft in the legally prescribed activation area means that the lighting is suppressed and the light remains off
